Equipment hire on the Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca has one of the highest concentrations of foreign-owned property in Spain, and the hire market has grown around maintaining it. The typical job is not a new build. It is a terrace that needs re-waterproofing, a pool being retiled, a rendered facade coming away, a drainage run that floods every autumn, or solar panels going onto a roof. Almost all of it is short work on individual properties, which is why daily and weekly rates matter here far more than monthly ones.

What moves off the yards on this coast:

• Mini diggers of 1.5–2 t at €100–180/day for pool excavation, drainage, removing old paving and taking out root-bound planting. Above 2.5 t (€150–280/day) the machine usually cannot reach the back garden at all.
• Scissor lifts of 8–10 m at €45–90/day and articulated booms of 12–16 m at €90–230/day for soffits, roof edges, shutter boxes and the three-storey blocks that fill the urbanisations.
• Facade scaffolding at €6–12 per m² per month — the standard for render repair and repainting, and priced monthly, not weekly.
• Generators at €28–55/day in the 3–5 kVA class for rural plots inland and for works where the supply has been isolated.
• Plate compactors (€35–70/day), concrete mixers (€12–35/day) and breakers (€25–55/day), the everyday kit of terrace and driveway work.

Salt air changes what you should ask for

Anywhere within a kilometre or two of the sea, corrosion is a live issue rather than a theoretical one. It affects the work — which is why so much hire on this coast is driven by rust-stained render, failing balcony rails and roof fixings — and it affects the machine. Ask when equipment was last serviced, and on access platforms pay attention to the condition of the basket controls and outrigger pads rather than only the year of manufacture. If the hire is long and coastal, agree in writing what counts as fair wear and tear, because a deposit dispute over corrosion is a miserable way to end a job.

Urbanisation rules will slow you down if you let them

Most properties here sit inside a comunidad de propietarios. The rules that catch owners out are consistent across the coast: restricted working hours, especially over the long lunch period and at weekends; no obstruction of shared access roads; and written permission needed before scaffolding stands on common ground or a lorry parks across a communal entrance. Speak to the administrator before you confirm a delivery date, not after. Scaffolding permissions in particular take days, and a scaffold sitting idle still bills by the month.

Hire depots on the Costa Blanca cluster around Alicante, Elche, Torrevieja, Benidorm and Dénia, and each serves a radius rather than a set of municipalities. Delivery is charged separately at €100–250 per journey, twice — out and back. On a single-day hire of a small machine that transport charge can be larger than the machine, which is the classic first-invoice shock for anyone used to collecting tools themselves from a UK trade counter.

Which towns are served from where

In the south, yards around Alicante, Elche and Torrevieja typically cover Santa Pola, Guardamar, Rojales, Ciudad Quesada, Orihuela Costa, Pilar de la Horadada and San Miguel de Salinas. In the north, depots near Benidorm and Dénia cover Villajoyosa, Altea, Calpe, Benissa, Moraira, Jávea, Teulada and Pedreguer. The middle of the coast is genuinely competitive, so it is worth comparing quotes from both directions; at the extremes, the nearer yard almost always wins on transport even if its daily rate is a few euros higher.

Say what the job is, not what the machine is called

The most expensive mistake on this coast is a translated specification that quietly changes the machine. British terminology does not map one-to-one: a cherry picker is a plataforma articulada, a scissor lift a plataforma tijera, a digger a miniexcavadora or excavadora depending on size, and scaffolding is andamio, which on a quote will be priced per square metre of facade per month. Off-season is your friend

The building trade here follows the tourist calendar in reverse. Autumn and winter are when properties are empty and works get done, so that is peak demand for hire. Booking ten days to two weeks ahead is normally enough. August is the awkward month: fleets are quiet but so are the offices, and a quote requested in the second week of August may not be answered until September.

What we need from you

Four details do almost all the work: what you are trying to achieve, the postcode or urbanisation name, the dates, and the access — gate width, steps, slope, and whether a lorry can stop outside without blocking a communal road. Photos of the approach help enormously and take thirty seconds to send. If you are unsure which machine the job needs, say so rather than guessing; ordering height you do not need is the most common way people overpay here.

Reading a Spanish quote

You will receive a presupuesto, a written offer, rather than an instant online booking — that is normal, not a delay tactic. Check three lines. IVA at 21% is added on top, because Spanish hire prices are always quoted excluding VAT. Transporte is separate unless the quote explicitly says otherwise. Fianza is the deposit — roughly €300–800 on a small access platform, €400–1,000 on a mini digger — refunded after the machine is checked back in at the yard, not on the day it leaves your property.

Operator or no operator

For access platforms, Spanish law requires documented training specific to the machine, and a UK card is not automatically recognised. If nobody on site holds Spanish-recognised training, tell us and we will quote the job with an operator from the start. For short access jobs, a truck-mounted platform with an operator at €55–90 per hour with a four-hour minimum is frequently the cheapest legal way to get the work done.
